Welcome to Metallic Green

Rod2

Rod Bonnette

Welcome to the first edition of Metallic Green. A funny name perhaps, but one that tells a story. Sims Metal Management is at the forefront of recycling and playing a key role in the efficient use and reuse of the planet's resources. A role that is by any definition green. And since the major focus of our work is metal.... the funny name captures the essence of what we do.

We are delighted, too, to be partnering with KESAB environmental solutions. We can learn a lot from the breadth and depth of KESAB's experience over 40 years in helping our environment and community and we hope that, as the leader in our field, we can bring real value to the ever more important matter of environmental responsibility.

Did you know that for every 1 tonne of aluminium produced using secondary aluminium smelting processes, approximately 7.9 tonnes of CO2 emissions are stopped, and similarly every 1 tonne of ferrous scrap metal used in steel making saves 2.1 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted. As the largest recycler of its type in the world, Sims Metal Management's (SMM) operations in the 2010 financial year prevented some 13.2 million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted to the atmosphere.

The employees of SMM are justifiably proud of the role we play in helping to protect our environment, a role recognized for the second consecutive year by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where SMM was again nominated as one of the Global Top 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.

This magazine is designed to give you an insight into the people and activities of SMM South Australia & Northern Territory, just one part of this internationally recognised recycling leader. If you have any enquiries or if a story sparks your interest please don’t hesitate to drop me a note on rod.bonnette@simsmm.com
