What's special about roadsides?

In many areas, roadside vegetation is often all that remains of the original vegetation.
The pace of clearing of our native trees, shrubs and grassland in the past 30-40 years has led to the reduction of natural habitat and loss of biodiversity, causing significant concern.
Biodiversity is essential to our future survival (many medicines owe their origins to native plants and species). Once a species disappears it is lost forever. Roadsides with remnant vegetation provide an important refuge for many threatened species.
